Happy August!
As an educator, I always have mixed feelings about August. It signals the end of summer and the back-to-school craziness. I love summer break and the rest that it provides, but by August I am ready to start getting back to routines and structure. Can you relate?
All school year I dream of days spent in my creative studio over the summer. I imagine the creative energy will be abundant and I will have endless time to create. The reality doesn’t usually live up to my vision. I find myself frustrated that I didn’t achieve creative euphoria this summer.
I need structure.
I need habits.
I need routine.
As a creative soul, it seems odd that I would need all of that, but I have learned that those three things are critical to my creativity. While creativity isn’t linear, it thrives when you develop structures and habits that allow you to build a daily creativity practice. I have to carve out the time to feed my creative soul just as I take the time to care for my family and home. In the craziness of summer, I lost sight of my practice.
I am back in my studio for 15 minutes a day. Today I painted a background in my sketchbook. As I am making my daily to-do list, my 15 minutes of creativity is a must.
As you are shifting from summer to fall mode, find a way to schedule in creativity. Even 15 minutes a day can have a huge impact on your mental health.
In fact, find a way to take those 15 minutes today!
I’d love to hear about your creative practice!
P.S. I am excited to be launching creativity 1:1 coaching this fall! If you are interested in learning more, please send me an email!
